Another Free Writing February 15, 2010

So after a bit of looking around I find that I’m not really into my original topic anymore.  Maybe becasue it’s a bit over my head.  I realized that in order to do what I wanted I would have to do no mean amount of medical research.  Besides, most of the existing works on zombies is psychological or philosophical and not physical.  After a discussion with some of my friends I find myself interested in philosophy and religion.  We sat at a table for hours and explained theorem of existence and religion.  And that’s just a general explanation of what went down.  So I’m thinking, come up with a philosophical question and that should be an excellent research question.  Now what question?

Research and Reasons February 8, 2010

My major research question as it stands is just a very basic idea.  Can zombies exist, and if so, what would a zombie be like in reality.  I’ve read fictional works about zombies and played the games that helped spawn the recent craze in my opinion.  From what I gather of these experiences, we know a lot about something that we don’t think exist.  I think that zombies are simply amazing just in the aspect that they are “brought back” from the dead.

    I think that a virus that infects, kills, and reanimates it’s host in one day is unreal.  Can a virus even infect and kill a human in one day?  Another question, where did the myth of the zombie come from?  What was the reason?  Maybe it existed.  I believe that zombies can exist.  If the virus doesn’t exist then how can one be created.  How do we define what makes a zombie?  Have there been any attempts at zombification?  I may have to change my direction on this research.

Free Writing February 2, 2010

God I hate that my computer has been broken since the start of the semester. well at least i’m doing better at blogs than last time.  maybe i just don’t get it. but i’ll get it in the end. i don’t feel like thinking right now.  wish i could be killing zombies instead.  stupid solanum virus making people die and be reanimated.  how does the virus live after everything on the planet has been infected?  Maybe it hides deep underground like some of those bacteria recently discovered.  maybe that wasnn’t so recent but whatever.  Zombies and fencing.  I could beat a zombie with my swords I bet.  I’d survive.

My FCL (#2) February 2, 2010

My top five ideas for research are fencing, zombies, piratology, composers of the Baroque era, and world religions.  Truthfully though, only the first three really interest me enough to pursue.

Where fencing is concerned, my question would be how swordplay has evolved through the ages to become what it is today.  In that sense it’s not really about fencing but that’s what spawned the idea.  This topic is important to me in that I have recently found myself to be a warrior.  Moreover, a sword fighter.  I can bring a potentially new view to the perception of fencing by the general public I believe.  I think that the best and most enjoyable way to write about this would be the novella.

Zombies have always interested me.  Recently a friend of mine told me that a zombie apocalypse could happen.  That makes me want to research and find out everything about them that I can.  My question being whether or not zombies can exist and what can happen if they can exist.  This topic just screams novella too but a regular paper could also do.

Pirates of the Caribbean was a wonderful movie.  That got me wondering what being a real pirate was like.  Over the summer I also dressed as a pirate for the camp I worked at.  It all makes me want to know: What was a pirate?  Or for that matter, what modern pirates are and how that has changed over the ages.  Again this would make a good novella or a research paper.  I have to make up my mind.

What is research writing?  Is it studying, watching, or spending hours reading?  Sure it is.  It all depends on the person and what they want to research.  I, myself, think of it as a treasure hunt.  That particular idea was presented to me on a school website and I found it to be nearly perfect in my view.  Being a research writer is easy.  See how easy that was?  Yes we are all researchers because that is human nature.  Looking up something and sending your friend a text message to tell them about it makes one a research writer.  Developing a research question is the question.  I like to think of what I want to do, why I want to do it, and how I could go about doing it.  For example, I want to do something on fencing.  I want to do this because I want to know why we aren’t swinging massive swords against massive armored knights.  I’ve already started to research this by fencing for the past two years and starting to get an idea of why it’s done this way.  That makes me want to learn.  I want to know EVERYTHING.
